MEGANESIA -

A journey that moves through a time when Mountains shift, Rivers form, Islands separate

and reconnect. Cultures travel, adapt and survive. What appears to be different becomes

recognisable as part of a much larger story. The opening begins with a call from Yirrmal,

invoking the Banambirr/Morning Star songline of Arnhem Land. Responses emerge from

Far North Queensland, Torres Strait, PNG and West Papua. Dancers and musicians gather

from different places, carrying their own cultural identities into a shared contemporary

space. As the work unfolds, ancient coming-of-age and ceremonial musical forms move

into trance, electronica and contemporary urban sound. Traditional and contemporary

dancers collide and converge. Young artists stand alongside cultural knowledge holders.
